Santos wins Olimpia and ranks 1st in Libertadores

Santos beat Olimpia 3-2 on Thursday night, in an almost 40º heat in Asunción, Paraguay, and qualified for the Libertadores da América round of 16 as first place in Group G, with 13 points.

Peixe’s goals were scored by Carlos Sánchez, Marinho and Kaio Jorge. The victory guarantees the place of Alvinegro with a round in advance. Santistas close the group stage against Defensa y Justicia (ARG), in Vila Belmiro. Olimpia could be eliminated if Defensa beat Delfin, in Ecuador, early Friday morning.

Santos’ positive result included the end of a double fast. Carlos Sánchez and Kaio Jorge had not scored in 23 and 15 games, respectively. Goalkeeper João Paulo made decisive saves.

Classified in Libertadores, Peixe will return to the field to face Goiás on Sunday, in Serrinha, for the 13th round of the Brazilian Championship.

Olimpia was better during most of the first 45 minutes, but Santos proved effective at every opportunity in the attack.

After initial pressure from Olimpia, Peixe opened the scoring on 14 minutes. Felipe Jonatan crossed, Madson anticipated and suffered a penalty from Recalde (keep that name). Carlos Sánchez converted and ended a 23-game fast.

Olimpia followed on Alvinegro and drew with … Recalde. Madson, important in Santos’ goal, hesitated to score from the top on 21 minutes.

At 33, Recalde appeared again. The Paraguayan took advantage of the space left in Jobson’s boat, received between Pará and Madson and turned to hit João Paulo’s corner and turn.

Coach Cuca changed the tactical scheme and gave up the defensive line of five – Madson went to the back and Jobson to the middle. In this way, the Santos FC improved. And the tie came with Marinho, always he, at 38 plays. The number 11 hit a foul in the area, the ball went through everyone and entered.

The first chance of the final stage was Olimpia. Pitta finished well and goalkeeper João Paulo saved with his foot on six minutes. At 8, Soteldo, yes, Soteldo, headed well and Azcona saved in the corner.

And in the 12th minute, Santos turned. Marinho crossed, Carlos Sánchez received alone and rolled for Kaio Jorge. The Menino da Vila dribbled the goalkeeper and scored after 15 matches.

When the scoreboard marked 24 ′, goalkeeper João Paulo made another great defense on a kind of bicycle from Leguizamón after a corner kick.

Olimpia insisted and João saved again at 33, when Montenegro won on top of Alison and headed hard. The Santos goalkeeper looked for a changed hand. In the 40th minute, Recalde scored a goal. It would be his third.

In the final minutes, Santos held on as they did and managed to win and advance in the Libertadores da América.
