European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen left the European Council meeting and went into prophylactic isolation after being told that a member of her team tested positive for the coronavirus.
“I have just been informed that a member of my cabinet tested positive for covid-19 this morning. I had a negative test myself. However, as a precaution, I will immediately abandon the European Council and go into isolation ”, announced the leader of the community executive, on her Twitter account.
Von der Leyen was meeting with the 27 heads of state and government of the European Union in the European Council building. According to the spokesman for the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, all precautionary measures were taken before the leaders’ summit, and the space was organized in such a way that physical distance was always assured. “Proximity contacts will be impossible”, he guaranteed.
Before the European Council meeting, the President of the Commission received several leaders in her office, including Portugal’s Prime Minister, António Costa. According to the PUBLIC, the prime minister did not contact the individual infected with the new coronavirus during his meeting with Von der Leyen, and while he remained in the Commission building he always used the mask and followed the rules of physical distance. “The prime minister maintains a behavior of constant caution and vigilance,” said a source in his office.
