The United States beat their record of new infections by covid-19 in 24 hours this Friday (23), with almost 80 thousand positives, according to data continuously updated by Johns Hopkins University.
Between 8:30 pm on Thursday and the same time on Friday, 79,963 new infections were reported, bringing the total number of infected people to almost 8.5 million across the country since the pandemic began.
The United States had already reached the 80,000 positive daily barrier during July, mainly due to new infections in southern states like Texas and Florida, where the virus was out of control at the time.
The worst outbreaks are now in the North and Midwest, with 35 of the 50 American states experiencing an increase in the number of cases.
The number of deaths in 24 hours has remained stable overall since the beginning of autumn, with a record of between 700 and 800 deaths per day. More than 223,000 people have died of covid-19 in the country since the pandemic began.
In absolute values, the United States is the country most affected in the world by the coronavirus, but not in relative values.
Measures such as wearing masks, which, if widespread, could prevent another 130,000 deaths by the end of February, according to a study released on Friday, became the subject of political dispute in a country in the midst of a campaign for the presidential elections of 3 November.
President Donald Trump, widely criticized for his management of the health crisis and who insists on minimizing the dangerousness of the virus, promised the imminent arrival of a vaccine, which he says will be free.
Democratic White House candidate Joe Biden also promised on Friday that the vaccine will be “free for everyone” if he wins the election.
