WASHINGTON  – Os United States record almost 100,000 new coronavirus cases daily this Friday, 30, setting another record in the wave of infections in the country. Second count Washington Post, more than 98 thousand cases were registered in the last 24 hours.

The previous record had been set just a day earlier, giving an idea of the speed with which the increase in cases is occurring. The country exceeded the mark of 9 million cases just 15 days after reaching 8 million. At least 229 thousand people have already died because of covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic.

Eleven states reported single-day record records for new cases this Friday: Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, Montana, Illinois, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio and Maine. And two states reached death records: Tennessee, with 78, and Montana, with 27.

The national total of cases, which is expected to rise over the night as more states and counties report their records, is just another sign of the country’s gloomy prospects. Many areas of the United States are going through their worst weeks. The country reported a record of more than 500 thousand new cases of coronavirus last week.

It is not just a few areas that drive the increase in cases, as occurred at the beginning of the pandemic. Half of the counties in the U.S. saw a spike in new cases during the past month. Almost a third saw a record last week.

Experts already predicted another peak in the cases, since the cold climate (in the north) makes people stay indoors and helps spread the virus. The holiday season also worries public health officials in the United States.

The increase in testing alone does not explain the leap in cases. Current coronavirus hospitalizations are steadily increasing again, although they have not yet passed the peak of summer (in the north).

Coronavirus cases are increasing in all states where the electoral dispute is fierce before election day, on Tuesday, offering evidence against the president’s argument Donald Trump that the pandemic is almost over and restrictions are no longer needed.

The increase in deaths, according to a study published in the journal Science, diminish support for the president’s re-election and Republican candidates. / W. POST e NYT
