Virgil van Dijk has suffered a knee injury and must undergo surgery, confirms Liverpool. It is unclear how long he will be out of action.
– Liverpool can confirm that Virgil van Dijk will have to undergo knee surgery after the injury he suffered in the match against Everton, the club writes.
Liverpool’s midfielder had to leave the pitch in the Merseyside derby after just seven minutes, after a rough meeting with Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. The goalkeeper escaped both penalties and red cards due to an offside.
It is not clear how long van Dijk will be out after the operation. The website The Athletic writes that it is “likely that he will lose most of the season”.
“There is no specific timetable for when he will return to action at the moment,” Liverpool wrote on their website.
It is stated that van Dijk will immediately begin rehabilitation with the club’s medical device, as soon as the operation is completed.
Liverpool must now manage without their midfielder giant for the first time since he arrived at the club in January 2018. The Dutchman has played all the games in the Premier League both previous seasons and has been one of the club’s most important players.
