On windows, on ATM cards, on banknotes and even on one of the objects that has been most dependent on humanity: on mobile phones. A group of Australian researchers believe that Covid-19 can withstand 28 days on smooth surfaces at an ambient temperature of 20 degrees Celsius.
There are 10 more days of survival than the flu virus.
But the conclusions do not stop there. Scientists exposed the new coronavirus to higher temperatures and concluded that heat reduces its survival.
For example, at 30 degrees, Sars-Cov-2 resists 21 days on paper notes and 7 days on plastic or stainless steel cards. It shows even more fragility when exposed to summer temperatures.
“At 40 degrees Celsius, the virus survived less than 24 hours. It is a good indicator because, in the summer, it should not last long but we still have to keep the rules on hand washing and disinfection ”, says Shane Riddell, of the Commonwealth of Australia Scientific and Industrial Research Organization.
A discovery that can help in the development of mechanisms that reduce the risk of contagion in high-contact materials, such as supermarket boxes.
