The President of the European Commission suddenly abandoned the meeting of leaders taking place in Brussels, after being informed that a close employee had tested positive for COVID19. However, the Portuguese prime minister, who was with her in a meeting this morning, will continue to participate in the summit, adds a source from António Costa’s office.
According to the same source, the prime minister did not have any direct contact with the person who is infected and the rules of social distance will also have been maintained during the meeting with Von der Leyen, who for now has no symptoms.
In the images of the moment when the President of the Commission receives António Costa, they are both wearing a mask and not even when the draft of the national recovery plan is delivered, is there any contact – the Prime Minister asked Von der Leyen to remove him from the portfolio without never touch.
Two tests per week
Von der Leyen is tested every Monday and Thursday and still has a new negative result. “However, as a precaution, I immediately leave the European Council and go into self-isolation,” he wrote on the social network Twitter.
It is the second time that the president of the community executive has been quarantined in less than two weeks. The first happened following the positive test of António Lobo Xavier. The German had participated in the meeting of the State Council, in Lisbon, where the advisor was also present.
Last week, Von der Leyen even canceled a trip to Greece so as not to risk having to be quarantined again because of a trip, especially when this week there was a European summit. However, this Thursday, he ends up having to leave the meeting. In Belgium, the quarantine is currently seven days and provides for a test on the fifth day. If the result is negative, then it is possible to be quarantined on the seventh day.
