A 39-year-old woman had been kept locked up for years by her husband in a bathroom at home in northern India. The spouse claimed that she suffered from an alleged mental illness that has not yet been confirmed. She was rescued by agents from the Department of Women’s Protection and Child Marriage Ban Rajni Gupta.
The victim was kept in private prison with the connivance of the couple’s children. She was found in a pitiful state, visibly malnourished and with clothes and bodies soiled with excrement.
The husband was arrested and the wife is in the care of relatives while the police await the results of the medical tests. The authorities classified mental problems as unfounded. According to the NGO Human Rights Watch (HRW), “hundreds of thousands of people with mental health problems are chained in about 60 countries around the world”.
– People can spend years chained to trees, locked in cages or barns because families have difficulties in dealing with the problem and governments do not provide adequate mental health services – explains the NGO researcher, Kriti Sharma.
