The State Secretariat of Health maintains initiatives and interventions to promote men’s health throughout the year, with the aim of motivating a healthier life.
This month, the actions are intensified due to the Blue November, an international movement created in 2003 to raise awareness about the prevention and early diagnosis of prostate cancer. However, the great call is to raise awareness about the health of men as a whole.
“Male injuries are major public health problems. Sociocultural factors point out that this public is still reticent about looking for the health service, and that is why our awareness and our alert for men to assume this habit so important that it is self-care ”, said the Secretary of State for Health, Beto Preto .
“It is important to be careful with the body and signs of illness, caution in traffic and other external causes, such as violence, which end up causing serious problems and deaths”.
According to the Ministry of Health, men aged 20 to 59 years, compared to women of the same fixed age, had higher morbidity and mortality, mainly due to external causes.
In Paraná, in 2018, men had ten times more deaths from homicides compared to women and four times when considering accidents. Mortality due to external causes in the young population, especially between 20 and 29 years old, corresponds to 80% of deaths.
The most prevalent types of cancer in men have been stomach, esophagus and colon, followed by lung and prostate cancer. According to an estimate by the National Cancer Institute (Inca), in the period 2020-2022, approximately 3,500 new cases of prostate cancer will occur in Paraná each year.
Paraná last year registered 2,460 diagnoses of prostate cancer, with 929 deaths; 83 diagnoses of penile cancer with 21 deaths, and 1,013 cases of oral cavity cancer and 326 deaths.
“Sesa maintains, throughout the year, in all services in the care network, initiatives and interventions to promote men’s health. Our service also guides the family to support and accompany men in this search for health care ”, explained Sesa’s Director of Health Care and Surveillance, Maria Goretti David Lopes.
According to her, it is known that historically, in addition to greater resistance to seeking health services, men do not usually follow the recommended treatments. “So, this is our orientation for this Blue November so that the family as a whole can take care of themselves and help each other, producing healthy relationships for everyone,” said Maria Goretti.
On November 24, the Secretariat of Health will promote a webinar on the Blue November, aimed at professionals working in the area. The main guidelines of the National Policy for Integral Attention to Men’s Health will be discussed, with transmission through Sesa’s youtube channel, starting at 2 pm.
The regional health offices also promote awareness actions throughout the month. The 14th Regional of Paranavaí put up posters alluding to the date with the theme Be Hero of Your Health. The activity counts on the participation of Regional employees and scholarship holders of the Fundação Projeto Araucária.
