Covid-19. New York Governor receives Emmy for pandemic press conferences

New York State Governor Democrat Andrew Cuomo will be awarded an Emmy by the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for his daily press conferences on the new coronavirus pandemic.

The Academy, whose members include media and entertainment personalities from around 60 countries and 500 companies, announced on Friday its plans to give Cuomo an International Emmy during an event to be broadcast live next Monday .

Academy President Bruce L. Paisner said Cuomo will be honored with the Founders’ Prize for using his briefings to inform and calm the public. This award has already been given to people like Al Gore, Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg.

“The governor’s 111 daily briefings worked so well because he effectively created television shows, like characters, graphics and stories of success and failure,” argued Paisner. “People from all over the world tuned in to see what was going on and New York became a symbol of the determination to fight,” he added.

Cuomo used his more than 100 slide-based presentations, displayed via ‘Powerpoint’, and in his style, sometimes emotional, sometimes cutting, to give daily updates and detail his administration’s efforts to protect the economy and to prevent the realization of forecasts of 100 thousand hospitalized people simultaneously.

The pandemic peaked in the first half of April, when around 18,000 people were hospitalized at the same time and hospitals and nursing homes reported 800 deaths a day. New York has recorded at least 34,187 deaths associated with covid-19, according to Johns Hopkins University, and is now experiencing fewer deaths and hospitalizations than in the spring.

The United States is the country with the most deaths (252,555) and also with the most confirmed cases of infection (more than 11.7 million). Next, in number of deaths, Brazil (168,613 dead, more than 6 million cases), India (132,162 dead, more than 9 million infected), Mexico (100,104, more than one million infected) and the United Kingdom (54,286 dead, more than 1.4 million cases).

France, with more than 2.1 million cases (48,265 dead), is the fourth country in the world in number of infected, after the USA, India and Brazil, followed by Russia (more than 2 million cases, 35,311 dead), Spain (more than 1.5 million cases, 42,619 dead) and Argentina (more than 1.3 million cases, 36,532 dead). The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 1.3 million deaths worldwide since December last year.
