Unprecedented aim in science! For the first time, scientists have managed to reverse the aging process of the human cell, which occurs naturally over the years, when telomeres, structures that form the ends of chromosomes, are shortened. This causes DNA to be damaged, preventing cells from replicating.

The discovery was made with the help of 26 volunteer patients, who volunteered to stay in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, inhaling pure oxygen at a pressure greater than that of our atmosphere, for five 90-minute sessions, every week, for three months. . As a result, the researchers saw some cell telomeres being extended up to 20% of the size they were before, staying as they were 25 years ago.

Shair Efrati, study leader and doctor at the medical school at Tel Aviv University in Israel, says he was inspired by a NASA experiment to conduct his own. “After the NASA experiment, when one of two twin brothers was sent into space and the other stayed on Earth, there was a significant difference in the telomere length, and we realized that changes outside the environment can affect changes in the cell nucleus, which happen throughout aging, “said the doctor.

The research was also able to reduce senescent cells, those that stop dividing and accumulate in the body, by 37%, giving space for new and healthy cells to multiply. In previous animal studies, scientists found that life could extend by more than a third.

Telomere experiments, however, are nothing new, according to Efrati. The scientist says that many pharmacological and environmental interventions have been explored in order to find answers for the stretching of these extremities. “The significant improvement in telomere length, during and after these unique protocols, brings to the scientific community with a new basis of understanding that aging can be found and reversed at a basic level of cell biology,” he adds.

Even with the surprising result of the Efrati study, the discovery is still not cause for excitement, as further studies with the hyperbaric oxygen chamber will be needed. Meanwhile, as much as the aging process is natural, it is good to know that there are some other factors that may end up accelerating the shortening of telomeres, such as the lack of good nights sleep and the intake of excess processed foods, for example. Improving these routines can have the opposite effect, of deceleration.
