Moro gave legal advice to businessman accused of bribery

Former judge and former justice minister Sergio Moro issued a legal opinion to Israeli businessman Benjamin Steinmetz, who was already arrested in 2016 on charges of bribery, in a lawsuit against Brazilian mining company Vale.

To the portal Conjur, the law firm Warde confirmed, in a note, the hiring of Moro “at the request” of Steinmetz. “Warde Advogados, duly authorized by his client, informs that he has hired, at the request of Israeli businessman Benjamin Steinmetz, an opinion by ex-minister Sergio Moro in a transnational dispute, which is established primarily in London,” he says.

The opinion, according to the newspaper Or Balloon, is one of three that the ex-minister already did after he left the government.

The dispute between Vale and the Israeli businessman began in 2014, when the Steinmetz company had a concession revoked by the Guinean government to explore the Simandou iron ore reserve.

The businessman had signed a partnership agreement with the Brazilian mining company for the joint exploitation of resources in the country, but the deal failed after Steinmetz was accused of bribing Guinean authorities to favor his commercial interests.

On account of the accusation, in 2016 Steinmetz was arrested by the Israeli police, in an operation coordinated by the United States and Israel.
