Reinaldo Costa Teles Pinheiro, one of the faithful squires since the first hour of Pinto da Costa, president of FC Porto, died.
The “Chefinho”, as footballers who passed the dragons affectionately called him, was 70 years old – he was born in Paços de Ferreira, on February 14, 1950 – and lost the battle for life to the covid-19, at Hospital de São João , in Porto, where he had been hospitalized for about a month. Widowed, his wife Lourdes passed away on November 8, 2011, had two children.
Reinaldo Teles has accompanied Pinto da Costa since they met in 1967, when the now president was director of Boxing and he was a promising boxer in the club. A relationship of complicity, loyalty, trust and friendship broken 53 years later by the damned coronavirus, whose pandemic is leaving the world in swamps. “May he win, because he really is a man who has done a lot, a lot, for this club. It will be very difficult to appear a president like Pinto da Costa,” said Reinaldo Teles in June, in one of the last public statements, when he supported the reelection of Pinto da Costa for a 14th term at the helm of FC Porto.
He was 12 years old when he enrolled in the dragons as practically boxing, in which he was regional champion (1971) and national champion (1973/74) in the Medium Weight category. He put his gloves down in 1979, after 17 years as an athlete, but remained attached to Porto boxing, assuming the functions of sectionist at the invitation of … Pinto da Costa. And that was until 1982, because Pinto da Costa, when he assumed the presidency, called him to football, as deputy director. He lived close to FC Porto’s first European conquest, the 1984 Cup Winners’ Cup final, lost (2-1) to Juventus, in Basel. Three years later, in 1987, he celebrated with Pinto da Costa the first continental title of FC Porto, with victory (2-1) over Bayern Munich, in Vienna. And six months later he won the Intercontinental Cup, in the famous game with Peñarol, in the snow of Tokyo (Japan). The following year, following the death of Luís Teles Roxo, in a road accident, Reinaldo assumed the leadership of the Football Department, as the president’s right hand. The first three international finals are among the more than 2000 games in which he sat on the bench of the substitutes of FC Porto, alongside Pinto da Costa and / or coaches such as José Maria Pedroto, Artur Jorge, Tomislav Ivic, António Oliveira, Bobby Robson and José Mourinho, among others.
In 1986, Reinaldo became director of FC Porto. He reached the second most important position of the Board in 1990, when he was elected as one of the vice-presidents of Pinto da Costa and still a member of the Superior Council. With the creation of SAD in 1997, he also became a member of the Board of Directors of the company that manages professional football, of which he was still a member in the present term of 2020/2024, although now as a non-executive director. After 30 years as the club’s director – his brother, Joaquim Costa Teles Pinheiro, was also vice-president of the board – he left the social bodies led by Pinto da Costa in 2016.
For his good services and unparalleled dedication to FC Porto, he was distinguished with the Dragão de Ouro, as manager of the year, in 1989. He collected another award, the Dragão de Honra, in 1998, who since October 24, 1994 has become an Honorary Member of dragons. Discreet and of good treatment, Reinaldo Teles maintained good relations with practically all the sports agents, even in the main rival clubs. He was known as the “cheerleader” Superdragões, contributing to calm the mood in moments of conflict with the Direction.
Trader and entrepreneur, it became news for the best reasons. He was among the defendants of FC Porto in the Apito Dourado case – all cases were eventually closed – he faced charges of alleged tax fraud by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, for business in a Maia real estate company of which he was co-owner, and was sued by Solverde in 2007, for debts to Casino de Espinho.
Reinaldo Teles’ health suffered a severe shock in 2008, when he was the victim of a myocardial infarction that threw him into a bed at the Hospital de São João, in Porto, precisely where he would die today, at the age of 70.
