With the process already advanced with regard to the authorization of vaccines, it is time to define the first steps for its administration. On December 29, the conditional marketing of the pharmaceutical vaccine should be approved and should arrive in our country in early January.

The first tranche may be used to vaccinate 300,000 people. Know where it will be stored.

Vaccine cost could reach 200 million euros

The Minister of Health, Marta Temido, said this Wednesday that the vaccine against COVID-19 should arrive in January. The vaccine will be free, optional and administered at the National Health Service (SNS). Regarding the hypothesis of the vaccine being given in health centers or in large less decentralized vaccination centers, Marta Temido said that it would be through the NHS, pointing out two possible scenarios:

A first moment in which there will be a context of greater scarcity in access to vaccines and, therefore, similarly to what other countries have been planning, will be a more controlled scenario, but then we admit that throughout the year 2021 we will move to a scenario wider coverage with more doses available and also greater expansion of administration points.

In an extreme scenario at the end of the year, it is possible to have a much more decentralized distribution than at the beginning

Marta Temido also admitted that the vaccination process will be long and that the Portuguese cannot “depart from the rules” to which they have become accustomed. The Minister of Health also said that “thewhat we estimate may be the global amount associated with vaccines for our country could reach 200 million euros and exceed 22 million doses of vaccines ”.

It is also known that the vaccine should be stored in Coimbra, a place that the Government has indicated for the general storage of all vaccines against COVID-19. Distribution throughout the country should be made by land on the mainland and by air to the regions of Madeira and the Azores.

According to the contract with the European Union, member states will receive 25 million vaccines in a first tranche that could reach up to 200 million. Today the Pfizer vaccine has been approved in the UK.

Although this vaccine has to be kept at very low temperatures (-70ºC), Pfizer guarantees that it can be stored for up to five days at higher temperatures, between 2 and 8ºC.

According to some information, the price of vaccines will be:

  • Pfizer: 17 euros per dose (2 doses required)
  • Modern: 27 to 31 euros (2 doses required)
  • Astrazeneca: 3 to 4 euros (2 doses required)
  • Johnson & Johnson: 8.5 euros (1 dose)
  • Vacina Sputnik V: 8 euros (2 doses)
