Bayern Munich practically sentenced, this Tuesday in the visit to Chelsea, the passage to the quarter-finals of the Champions League, while the Portuguese international Nélson Semedo contributed to Barcelona’s draw in Naples.
In London, the first leg of the round of 16 had a very busy first half, with opportunities for both sides, but only in the second half did the goals that gave Bayern a 3-0 victory.
The Bavarian side had Gnabry and Lewandowski perfectly in tune, with the Pole signing first assists for the German winger’s two goals in the 51st and 54th minutes before he scored the third in the 76th.
Bayern are therefore well off to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Champions League, against Chelsea who ended the encounter reduced to 10 elements, by expelling Marcos Alonso, on 83 minutes.
The Bavarian side continued the German team’s brilliant entry into the round of 16, after Borussia Dortmund and Leipzig last week overcame Paris Saint-Germain (2-1) and Tottenham (1-0), respectively.
The second leg is scheduled for March 18, in Munich, on the same day that Barcelona will host Napoli, after drawing (1-1) in the Neapolitans’ stronghold, in a duel that put the players face to face. Portuguese international full-back Nélson Semedo, for the Catalans, and Mário Rui, for the Italians, both starting.
At San Paolo, the team led by Gennaro Gattuso took advantage of a great goal by Belgian international Dries Mertens in the 30th minute. With this goal, the striker equaled the Slovak Marek Hamsik – currently playing in China – as the best scorer in the history of Naples, both with 121 goals.
Mertens left this match with a ‘bittersweet’ feeling, since, despite the historic goal scored, he had to leave the pitch in the second half, due to injury, three minutes before Barcelona equalized the score, in 57, through the Frenchman Antoine Griezmann , following an assist by Nélson Semedo.
The culé team lost Chilean Arturo Vidal to the second leg in Barcelona after the midfielder was sent off near the end due to a disagreement with Mário Rui.
The round of first leg matches of the round of 16 ends on Wednesday, with the visit of Juventus, Portuguese international Cristiano Ronaldo, to Lyon and the reception of Real Madrid to Manchester City, by Bernardo Silva and João Cancelo.
