Guinean Prime Minister Aristides Gomes today appointed Minister of Justice Ruth Monteiro, by order, to take charge of the Foreign Affairs portfolio as well.
In the dispatch, to which Lusa had access, Aristides Gomes states that Ruth Monteiro becomes the substitute for Suzi Barbosa, whose resignation request was accepted.
“As a result, the former foreign minister, Suzi Carla Barbosa, is prevented from speaking or acting on behalf of the Government of Guinea-Bissau,” the statement reads.
Suzi Barbosa, resigned on January 24, citing personal and political issues.
“My resignation from the Government, which I proudly represented, is due to personal and political reasons, which I consider fundamental for the safeguarding of my dignity, of which I am entitled and not abdicate”, said Suzi Barbosa, in the resignation letter sent to Prime Minister.
Suzi Barbosa, elected deputy of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), in the March 2019 legislatures, was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in July, with the inauguration of the new Government.
The now ex-minister resigned after the controversy raised for having joined the delegation of the candidate given by the National Elections Commission as the presidential winner, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, on a visit to Nigeria.
The candidate toured several African and European countries despite electoral litigation being ongoing because the PAIGC-supported candidate, Domingos Simões Pereira, contested the results alleging fraud.
This week, Suzi Barbosa appeared again with Sissoco Embaló during a visit to Turkey.
