Viana do Castelo. Five civic movements demonstrate against lithium extraction


The protest, scheduled to start at 9:00 am, which aims to “demand government respect for citizens”, is organized by the SOS Serra d`Arga movement, Corema – Association for the Defense of Heritage / Movement for the Defense of the Environment and High Heritage Minho, SOS Terras do Cávado, SOS Serra da Cabreira and In Defense of Serra da Peneda Soajo.

According to the spokesman for the civic movement SOS Serra d`Arga, in the district of Viana do Castelo, Carlos Seixas, the “concentration starts at 9:00 am near the building of the Portuguese Environment Agency – Administration of the Northern Hydrographic Region, located next to the youth hostel and Eiffel Bridge “.

The initiative also provides for a “march, along the Viana do Castelo riverside to the city center, as a way of raising public awareness”.

“We want to say that in Serra d`Arga there will not be a hole. We want to say that this mining project is of no use. That local development is not done in this way,” said Carlos Seixas.

Serra d`Arga, in the district of Viana do Castelo, covers an area of ​​10,000 hectares, of which 4,280 are classified as a Site of Community Importance.

The Government wants to create a cluster of lithium and the battery industry in 2020 and will launch a public tender for the allocation of lithium exploration rights in nine areas of the country.

In addition to the two contracts already announced in Montalegre and Boticas, the areas of Serra d`Arga, Barro / Alvão, Seixo / Vieira, Almendra, Barca Dalva / Canhão, Argemela, Guarda, Segura and Maçoeira will also be covered.
