The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, raised doubts yesterday about the reopening of the border with Spain, scheduled for July 1. “It can be seen that at a given moment there is a generalization of the opening of the border with Spain. As you know, there are already occasional cases of openness. They have been occurring over the past few weeks. What is new is the intention to generalize this opening. Obviously, both States are attentive to the evolution of the health situation, ”he said.

The President, however, was just talking about a thesis, explains a source from Belém to Expresso, and was not demarcating himself from what was planned. Unless, taking into account the unpredictability of the pandemic context, the health situation deteriorates and governments take another decision. But the statement shows that Marcelo is concerned about the wrong image he is experiencing abroad, that Lisbon is confined. Also in Spain, there is confirmation that the Ministries of Health and the Interior maintain the opening of borders that day.
