The balance sheet, carried out at 1 am on Monday in Lisbon, reports 27,000 new cases, bringing the total to more than 2.2 million confirmed cases (2,278,373).

The number of new daily infections has decreased slightly in the past 24 hours, after three consecutive days with more than 30,000 new cases.Outbreaks of infections in states like California (with 4,515 more), Florida (more 4,049), Texas (more 4,430) and Arizona (more 3,109) have triggered the global count.

The focus of the pandemic in the United States has now shifted from the east coast to the states of California, Florida, Texas and Arizona, which together account for almost half of new cases nationwide.

New York, where the epidemic appears to be under control, remains the state most affected in the US by the pandemic, with almost 400,000 confirmed cases and 31,083 deaths.

The provisional death toll – 119,959 – has already exceeded the lowest figure in the initial White House estimates, which projected between 100,000 and 240,000 deaths due to the pandemic.

U.S. President Donald Trump reduced those estimates, anticipating that the final number would be 50,000 to 60,000 deaths, although in his latest estimates he has already predicted up to 110,000 deaths, a number that has also been exceeded.

For its part, the University of Washington Institute of Health Metrics and Assessments, whose models for the evolution of the pandemic are frequently used by the White House, estimates that the United States will arrive in October with more than 200,000 deaths.
