Flushing the toilet could create a cloud of viral particles, study warns

Um new study warns that virus particles present in people’s feces infected can be thrown into the air when the toilet flushed.

The research, published in the journal Physics of Fluids and cited by CNN and for Sky News, is authored by physicists specialized in fluid dynamics who started the investigation after the presence of SARSCoV-2 in faecal samples.

With this information, the danger that the Covid-19 can be transmitted through the common use of public toilets, can to affect the way workplaces, cafes and restaurants reopen.

According to the study, this is due to the enormous turbulence caused by the flow of Water, which can spread bacteria and viruses.

To reach this conclusion, computer models were used to simulate flows of Water and air in a toilet and the resulting droplet cloud. “The results of the simulations were impressive,” said the American Institute of Physics, quoted by Sky News.

As the Water it enters the toilet, a number of vortexes are created that continue to rise into the air, carrying droplets at a height of almost one meter. At that time, the droplets are very likely to be inhaled or fall onto surfaces.

One way to avoid this problem is to close the lid before flushing the toilet, which will reduce the spread of the aerosol.
