“With the second generation of Tiguan, we started our global strategy in 2016. Now, Volkswagen is taking a new step by electrifying, digitizing and networking the new Tiguan. This means that the SUV is ready to face the challenges of our time” , said Ralf Brandstätter, director of operations and newly appointed CEO of the brand.
In the visual, the facelift framed the Tiguan 2021 in the latest aesthetic concepts of the brand, in order to bring it closer to the bigger brothers Touareg and Atlas Cross Sport. In this sense, the front grille got bigger and wider, while the hood received new creases to give the feeling of being taller. LED headlamps with Matrix technology are also new, as is the design of the bumper, which varies according to each version.
The brand new logo, which debuted at Golf, is also present. At the front, the new grille stands out, while at the rear the emblem appears just above the name of the car, which is now stamped in the center of the trunk lid. Inside, the logo appears on the new steering wheel (identical to the newly launched Nivus), accompanied by other novelties such as an updated multimedia center and an unprecedented exchange gauge.
According to VW, all essential technological sectors of the Tiguan 2021 have been optimized. The model for the first time is now offered in a hybrid version of the plug-in, with power of 245 hp, called eHybrid. According to factory data, the autonomy is 504 km in the WLTP driving cycle, being possible to run only in electric mode at speeds up to 130 km / h. There is also an option for the GTE mode, which when activated offers special dynamics.
One of the most anticipated versions of the range, the sports variant R is the star of restyling. It offers a TSI engine with 320 hp power and all the dynamic preparation characteristic of the brand’s sports division. It is equipped with the well-known 4Motion traction system, in this case modified with a new torque distribution system capable of varying the force between the wheels. The driver can choose between Comfort, Sport, Race, Individual, Offroad and Snow driving modes.
In terms of technology, the new multimedia center (similar to the one used here by Nivus) dispenses with the presence of physical keys and bets on several touch-sensitive surfaces. There is also connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wireless, on-board internet and a Harman / Kardon sound system with ten high-performance speakers and a 480-watt amplifier (optional). Finally, the Travel Assist system offers driving assistance with brake and accelerator control – always with driver supervision.
In the European market, the range of versions will consist of the basic finishes, Life, Elegance, R-Line and R. The production will continue to be distributed by several factories worldwide, including that of Wolfsburg, in Germany; Kaluga, Russia; Puebla, Mexico, and Shanghai, China. The Tiguan sold in Brazil comes from Mexico and the expectation is that the restyled model will be launched here in 2021.
