According to a document published in the American magazine New England Journaul of Medicine (NEJM), a study found that people of blood type A, when infected with the new coronavirus, are 50% more likely to need respiratory help. Type O patients have 35% less risk. The work was developed by doctors from seven Italian and Spanish hospitals.

“In less than two months, all the information needed to evaluate the results and compare them with a control group of 2,205 healthy individuals was obtained. Thus, a higher frequency of 26 genetic variants was identified in patients affected by respiratory failure compared to the uninfected control group, and two of them in particular, located on chromosomes 3 and 9, showed a potent association with severity ”, explain the authors

Almost 2,000 patients hospitalized in ICUs with Covid-19 were compared to 2,205 people without the disease. Then, doctors noted that the blood group may be a factor that increases or decreases the chances of worsening health.

“The results of this study allow us to advance in the identification of patients at higher risk who will need ICU admission, as well as to better understand the pathophysiology of the disease through the identification of these implicated genes”, explains Ricard Ferrer, president of the Spanish Society of Intensive Care, Critical and Coronary Units (SEMICYUC).

“Previous research has indicated that factors such as age and chronic illnesses like diabetes and hypertension, as well as obesity, increase the risk of developing severe cases of covid-19. However, this study demonstrates the possibility of identifying people who are more vulnerable to the development of severe disease with pulmonary insufficiency due to the coronavirus, according to their genetic characteristics, which makes it possible to identify risk groups that need special protection and develop personalized treatments ”, said in notes the Spanish Ministry of Science.

“This collaborative European study was the first to identify genetic factors that increase the risk of developing respiratory failure in patients with covid-19. However, it is not the only one to investigate this line, since there are different international consortia whose objective is to identify genetic risk characteristics of Covid-19. In this way, future studies will allow to deepen these results ”, completes the ministry.
