A team of Australian scientists announced on Friday (26) that they had decided to test on a large scale a vaccine used for decades against tuberculosis to see if it is capable of immunizing health professionals for the new coronavirus.
The test for this vaccine, BCG, will be carried out with 4,000 hospital workers to verify their ability to reduce the symptoms of Covid-19, researchers at the Murdoch Institute in Melbourne reported.
“Although it was originally developed against tuberculosis and is still administered to more than 130 million babies every year, BCG also increases the body’s basic immune capacity, helping it to respond to germs more strongly,” explained the researchers. in a statement.
“We hope that there will be a reduction in the frequency and severity of Covid-19 symptoms for health personnel who have been vaccinated with BCG,” explained team leader Nigel Curtis.
