The Ministry of Health recommends that people over 60 stay at home. It is also indicated that the elderly remain only in the company of people who are also isolated, to avoid the possibility of contamination.

Because of community transmission in the country (when it is no longer possible to know the source of the infection because it has already spread at random), children who are not in isolation should not have contact with the elderly. Even if there are no signs of the disease, as about 30% of children who contract the new coronavirus are asymptomatic.

Since March 23, the vaccine against Influenza has been available at health centers across the country. People over the age of 60 need to be vaccinated, but they must choose times of low movement or ask for vaccination at home. Some municipalities will have vaccinations in pharmacies specifically for this public. Important to note: the influenza vaccine does not prevent the coronavirus.

Elderly people living in long-term care facilities should not receive visits, as they are more fragile and have a greater chance of complications. The health teams of these institutions must also redouble their attention with their personal hygiene and the use of masks.

The indication is that caregivers increase their shifts, staying longer in the elderly’s home, thus avoiding transfers. When this is not possible, the professional needs to pay more attention to hygiene. The caregiver must remove his shoes and change clothes when he arrives from the street. He should also wash his hands before and after having physical contact with the elderly. If that caregiver has any flu or cold symptoms, he or she should be removed immediately.

After a sneeze, the virus can stay on the cloth for a long time. So, if the handkerchief goes into your pocket, your hands can be contaminated later. The elderly should give preference to disposable tissues and cover their nose and mouth with their arms when coughing or sneezing.

Glasses, cutlery, plates and bottles must not be shared. The same goes for clothing, sheets and pillowcases.

Care must also be taken with food packaging. There are two ways to do this: always clean your hands after handling or sanitize the packages with alcohol 70. In the absence of alcohol, soap and water can be used.

At home, the elderly should turn on the air conditioning less, giving preference to leaving the windows open for natural ventilation. It is also important to avoid closed air-conditioned environments, such as shopping malls, buses or cars.

You should do physical activity or move well at home. Good nutrition, drinking lots of water and good sleep are also essential. Visiting the doctor should only be done in emergency situations. Routine consultations at this time are not recommended.
