RIO – “I was worried because, for many days, I already had a low fever and taking antipyretic. When I decided to stop the medicine, the fever reached 38.5 °. And I was noticing a change in the taste: the foods were salty beyond normal “. These were the symptoms described by geologist Luiz Ferraz, 43, who tested positive for Covid-19 on Wednesday. With fever, dry cough and sinusitis, he was admitted to the emergency room of a private hospital, in Brasília, last Saturday (21), where he underwent face and lung resonance exams. The last test showed the appearance of “frosted glass”, which raised the suspicion of infection by the new coronavirus, even, according to him, without having had contact with anyone under suspicion.
Luiz Ferraz was immediately admitted to a semi-intensive care unit, especially isolated for patients at risk for coronavirus. After undergoing blood tests and collecting the nasal mucosa, and staying five days in hospital, Ferraz only learned that he was infected on Wednesday night (25), when he was discharged, as he had stable vital signs and good oxygenation, with able to isolate himself in a room for another 14 days. A resident of Rio for 18 years, the geologist was born in Curitiba (PR) and a week ago he is in Brasília, where he will have to comply with quarantine within a ten-square-meter room, until he heals.

– I’m feeling fine, zero dizziness or something. The indications were of sinusitis with low fever. Now this dry cough persists, which were already frequent in other episodes involving attacks of sinusitis. A week before I went to the hospital I was locked up at home, I was probably infected on the way to work around March 12 – says, through a video call, the geologist, who is 1.83m tall and weighs 112kg .
As soon as he was admitted, he received antibiotics in his vein. After the test was positive, the doctor prescribed two antibiotics to take in isolation, one for three days and the other for ten, concomitantly.
Confinement maintained: Witzel says he will continue to follow WHO’s recommendation for containment and criticizes Mandetta
– In the hospital, I couldn’t continue working, I took the opportunity to watch many films and get information from the newspapers about everything – he says. – The atmosphere there was peaceful, the medical teams were super protected with two masks, two gloves and two uniforms. One detail I noticed is that doctors are more nervous than nurses who, being on the front line all the time, know that the problem with coronavirus is overexposure, the immune system collapses. And yet they are very calm. They go from room to room treating infected patients – he comments.
After the scare of the news passed (“they gave me the option of staying in the hospital or being isolated at home”), Luiz Ferraz decided to tell his friends about the disease, who reacted immediately.
– Some people panicked and others freaked out, afraid of contact with me, but from March 14th onwards I went into quarantine, without contact, to preserve myself too – guarantees Ferraz, who insists on maintaining contact to pass the time .
– The fun comes down to video chatting with friends. Regarding food, I have been dealing with frozen foods and delivery service. A friend is here with me helping me. He leaves the food on the bedroom door and picks up dirty clothes that I leave in a bag – he says.
In the room where he fulfills his isolation, he only has a window overlooking the condominium, a TV, a laptop and his tablet. For 14 days, from today onwards, Luiz Ferraz will adapt to isolation by practicing physical activity (using his body weight), talking and getting information on the internet and watching movies and series, while waiting for the moment to open the door and return to circulate. At least for the other rooms.
