In addition to being a virus that spreads very quickly through the air, the coronavirus can also be found in feces. A study carried out in China and published in the specialized magazine JAMA analyzed 1,070 biological samples from 205 infected patients who, on average, were 44 years old. Most had fever, dry cough and fatigue. They were admitted to hospitals in Hubei and Shandong provinces and Beijing.

“It is important to note that the live virus was detected in feces, which implies that Sars-CoV-2 can be transmitted via the fecal route,” said the scientists.

Since the finding, countless specialists have been warning about the presence of the virus in the feces and the care with hygiene, especially in children who do not know how to clean properly or still use diapers. “We need to redouble the hygiene care, washing our hands very well after going to the bathroom or changing diapers. In addition, it is necessary to dispose of diapers properly, isolating the material well and taking it to the trash immediately,” said pediatrician Ana Maria Escobar, who is a columnist for CRESCER.

The Directorate-General for Health (DGS), of Portugal, also recommends strengthening hygiene, particularly in children. “Due to the growing evidence of excretion of the virus through the feces of patients in the process of transmission of the disease, particularly in children, it is recommended to reinforce personal hygiene after the release of the isolation”, advises the DGS, in a guidance published on the website.

Another study done in China, released by doctor Hong Shan, from the Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, in Zhuhai, Guangdong province, with 73 patients hospitalized with Covid-19 showed that 39 patients (53.4%; 25 men and 14 women), tested positive for fecal RNA SARS-CoV-2. The age of patients with positive RNA in the stool ranged from 10 months to 78 years, and the duration of stool positivity ranged from 1 to 12 days. In addition, the feces of 17 patients (23.3%) remained positive even after the respiratory samples were negative.
