The states with the highest number of infected are São Paulo (1052), Rio de Janeiro (421), Ceará (235) and the Federal District (200). Most deaths from the disease also occurred in São Paulo (58). Rio records nine deaths, Pernambuco and Ceará three each, while Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, Amazonas and Goiás each recorded one death.
If we look at the ages of people infected with a serious condition, the biggest risk group to date is concentrated between 60 and 79 years. Of a total of 391 serious cases evaluated, about 80 people were between 60 and 69 years old and another 70 people, between 70 and 79 years old. There is a high record, however, of infected people aged between 30 and 49 years, which add up to about 110 cases.
In the context of fatal victims, however, the profile of deaths shows a concentration among the elderly. Among the 59 cases evaluated until March 26, almost 40 are people aged between 70 and 89 years.
“The data show that the biggest victims are the elderly, but also anyone who has heart disease or diabetes,” said the Secretary of Health Surveillance, Wanderson Oliveira.
Of the 391 serious cases registered so far across the country, 341, equivalent to 88%, are in ICUs. The remaining 50 people are being monitored. Of these cases, 58% are men and 42%, women. When deaths are observed, 68% are men and 32%, women
This Thursday, Brazil celebrates a month since the first death occurred in the country. São Paulo continues to concentrate the largest number of cases and deaths in the country. So far, 58 deaths have been registered in São Paulo and 1,052 confirmed cases. Rio de Janeiro has 421 confirmed cases and nine deaths.
The other states that have already confirmed deaths in Brazil are Amazonas (1), Ceará (3), Pernambuco (3), Goiás (1), Santa Catarina (1) and Rio Grande do Sul (1), adding up to 77 deaths registered so far at 3 pm today.
The figures show the progress of Covid-19 in Brazil since February 25, when a 61-year-old man with a history of traveling to Italy tested positive for the disease. Since then, states have already decreed a health emergency and public calamity, and in a virtual meeting with Mayor Rodrigo Maia (DEM-RJ) on Wednesday, governors reiterated the isolation procedures adopted to contain the new coronavirus pandemic. The maintenance of the measures is recommended by epidemiologists and infectologists.
At a press conference yesterday, the Minister of Health Luiz Henrique Mandetta stated that “we have to improve this quarantine business, it was not good. It was hasty, it was messy “. Allies in the DEM interpreted the speech as a strategic retreat after Jair Bolsonaro’s statement on national television on Tuesday, 24, when the president returned to talk about “hysteria” around the pandemic the new coronavirus and criticized the closure of schools, among other measures adopted by governments and municipalities.
Under pressure, Mandetta, that many thought that even could step down because of Bolsonaro’s pressure, he softened his tone and denied his intention to leave the team. He tried to say, during the interview on Wednesday, that his concern is with the health and lives of people, and that the quarantines imposed by the States have even harmed medical work.
The dissonant voice came from the vice president Hamilton Mourão, who continued to defend social isolation. “Our government’s position, for the time being, is one: isolation and social detachment. This is being discussed and yesterday (tuesday, 24) the president sought to place. It may be that he expressed himself in a way, let’s say, that he was not the best ”, he said.
