“We will continue to restrict social interaction”, says Mendes after Bolsonaro’s criticism in the national chain
According to data released by the Ministry of Health, last Thursday (19) – the day on which Mato Grosso confirmed its first case of coronavirus – Brazil had 621 confirmed cases of Covid-19 nationwide.
From Thursday to Friday (20), the number of confirmed cases rose to 904, that is, 283 new cases. From Friday to Saturday (21) we had the first drop in the expansion of the disease, when Brazil registered 224 new cases.
From Saturday to Sunday (22), however, the cases rose again and the country confirmed 1,546 patients infected with the disease, an advance of 418 new cases.
Since last week, governors and mayors have determined a series of restrictions to contain the advancement in coronavirus in Brazil. And although it is not possible to say with certainty that the quarantine imposed has been giving the expected results, the fact is that since Sunday the confirmed numbers of Covid-19 have fallen again.
New bulletin released by the Ministry of Health earlier this week revealed that from Sunday to Monday (23) Brazil registered 345 new cases, 73 less than the previous day. From Monday to Tuesday (24) another fall, with 310 new cases confirmed.
In the late afternoon of Wednesday (25), according to the latest figures determined by the Government, the country recorded 2,433 confirmed cases of cornavirus, that is, 232 new cases of infected people.
It is important to note that, despite the positive result on average between days, the country continues to register an increase in the number of infected patients. To contain the progress of the disease, it is essential to follow the recommendations of the health organizations and remain in social isolation.
In the case of Mato Grosso, there is an increase in both the number of confirmed cases and the number of suspected cases. The State, however, has a particularity: until last week, tests to detect coronavirus in Mato Grosso needed to be sent to São Paulo and took about 7 days to be ready.
Since the last week, local laboratories have been accredited and the tests now show results between 24h and 72h. The growth in the number of cases, therefore, according to the Department of Health, was already expected.
According to official government data, on Thursday Mato Grosso had one confirmed case and 59 suspects, on Friday the number of confirmed cases remained and that of suspects rose to 73. On Saturday the State confirmed the second case and updated the number of suspects to 123.
On Monday, at a press conference, the Secretary of Health, Gilberto Figueiredo, informed that with the change in the logistics of the tests, the State had confirmed 6 new cases of coronavirus and 210 cases under investigation. On Tuesday, a new bulletin confirmed the seventh case of the disease in Mato Grosso and updated the number of suspected cases to 269.
Already on Wednesday afternoon, the Government released the latest survey of cases in Mato Grosso and, so far, the State has registered 9 confirmed cases of Covid-19 and 326 cases under investigation.
Crisis with Bolsonaro
This Tuesday, a statement by Jair Bolsonaro (without a party) on national television provoked negative reactions among the main political leaders in the country. In his speech, the president criticized the isolation and quarantine measures taken by state governments to combat the coronavirus .
One of the most advanced in tackling the disease in the country, Governor Mauro Mendes (DEM) avoided controversy and, on a brief note, highlighted the importance of the economy, but maintained all the restrictions on social interaction imposed in the State.
Isolation actions are recommended by health authorities, such as the World Health Organization (WHO). In several states in Brazil, such as in Mato Grosso, local managers stepped up and determined, through decrees, the temporary closure of commerce, schools and non-essential services to prevent the spread of the virus.
