Images show human cells under attack

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the United States (Niaid) last week released images of attacks by the new coronavirus on human cells.

The micrographs, recorded in patients with covid-19, show cells in apoptosis (terminal state), strongly infected by units of the Sars-VOC-2 virus.

According to Niaid, the images underwent digital color enhancement to differentiate viruses (smaller in size) from human cells (larger structures).

That’s because viruses are composed of a single RNA chain covered with a bilayer of lipids and proteins called spike. However, in the face of contagion, the cell replicates the virus’s genetic material until it overloads and dies.
