The coronavirus pandemic has exploded the number of unemployment claims in the United States. The benefit was requested by 3.28 million workers.
The expectation was that 1.5 million people would apply for insurance. The index surpassed the previous record of 695 thousand, established in October 1982.
The number has been explained by two factors: many American companies have announced layoffs and several state and local officials have ordered non-essential companies to close in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
