Band advanced in the negotiations to show the games of the Brazilian National Team in the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers (Qatar) on open TV. TV Walter Abrahão bought the rights to 56 games of the competition this week for R $ 60 million and is looking for partners for licensing. TV WA will have exclusivity in pay TV.
The choice of Band was made thinking about the channel’s experience with sports. The objective is an exchange of information aimed at increasing the quality of transmission and even loans from professionals. The announcement has not yet been made because the contract is missing. Between the owners of the stations, Walter Abrahão Filho and Johnny Saad, and for the sport department of Band, the partnership is already taken for granted. So much so that José Luiz Datena, presenter of the station that narrated a match of the Italian Championship yesterday (30), announced the news even with details to be resolved.
“Band agreed on a partnership to display World Cup Qualifiers games. The partnership with TV Walter Abrahão making Band even more the sport channel,” said Datena.
The report found that placing these matches on open TV was a request from Mediapro. The agency, which had the rights of eight qualifying federations, was unable to close deals with Brazilian broadcasters.
Brazilian national team games in qualifiers have not been shown on the Band since 2009, when Argentina 1 x 3 Brazil, by the 2010 World Cup qualifiers, was shown. The match guaranteed the team led by Dunga at the World Cup in South Africa.
In the negotiation, TV Walter Abrahão had the assistance of Márcio Moron, executive of Fox Sports between 2012 and 2020. Friend of Walter Abrahão Filho, owner of the station, Moron has been acting as a consultant in conversations with Brazilian football officials. It was Moron who designed the contract between the then unknown TV WA and Mediapro. The closed channel is present in basic packages from almost all paid operators in the country (Net / Claro, Oi, Sky and Gigabyte). In addition to the World Cup Qualifiers, TV WA negotiates the purchase of pay TV rights for the 2021 Santa Catarina Championship.
