Brazil received an offer to receive between 10 and 14 million doses of the AstraZeneca / Oxford vaccine against covid-19 as of February, the Ministry of Health reported today. The portfolio received on Saturday (30) a letter from the international consortium Covax Facility with confirmation.
The Covax Facility, a Global Vaccine Access Instrument, is an initiative of the WHO (World Health Organization) with 191 countries to promote equal access to immunizers against covid-19.
On January 15, President Jair Bolsonaro (without a party) issued a decree releasing credit of more than R $ 1.6 billion for the purchase of vaccines against covid-19 to fund Brazil’s entry into the consortium. This decree was authorized by Provisional Measure No. 1004, of September 24, 2020, which opened an extraordinary credit of R $ 2.5 billion.
” The federal government reiterates its great satisfaction with the successful results of Brazil’s access strategy to vaccines against covid-19 designed throughout 2020. In addition to Brazil’s participation in the Covax Facility consortium, the federal government has already signed a partnership with the company AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford, through the Oswaldo Cruz / BioManguinhos Foundation. The federal government also ensured the access of the Brazilian population, through the National Immunization Program, to the Coronavac vaccine, the result of a partnership between Sinovac and the Butantan Institute ” , the ministry said in a note.
The federal government also formalized a request to the Butantan Institute for the institution to submit a delivery schedule for the 54 million additional doses of CoronaVac, which had the purchase confirmed yesterday by the Ministry of Health, after pressure from governors and mayors. The intention of the portfolio headed by Minister Eduardo Pazuello is to sign the contract for the acquisition of the new doses of the vaccine against covid-19 until Friday (5).
The ministry yesterday sent a letter to Butantan asking for the schedule to be presented by Wednesday (3). Once the purchase contract was signed, the federal government would have a total of 100 million doses of CoronaVac to be distributed by the PNI (National Immunization Program).
