Scientists around the world are constantly discovering new information about Covid-19. In order to count the pandemic that plagues thousands of countries, the latest discovery by the Chinese, carried out by the China Medical University (CMU – China Medical University), showed that the wine tannin can inhibit the activity of two key enzymes in Sars-CoV-2.
What is wine tannin?
Tannin is a polyphenol (substances characterized by having one or more hydroxyls linked to one, or more aromatic rings), which is found in the grape skin and seeds. This substance is present in wine, and is responsible for bringing the sensation of astringency to the palate. With a bitter taste, it is also a great ally in protecting plants and fruits from herbivorous animals.
Typically, red wines have more tannins. Storage and shelf life also influence the intensity of tannins, so the substance can also be found in the wood of oak barrels that conserve alcohol.
Relationship between tannin and coronavirus
According to the Medical University of China (CMU), the study’s initial plan was to identify natural compounds that could have some positive effect on Sars-CoV-2 (Covid-19’s scientific name). The tannin stood out when tested with the virus substance, and showed a strong inhibitory capacity for the activity of two key enzymes.
Enzymes have a strong role in the proliferation of the virus, after all, they act as biological catalysts and accelerate chemical reactions in an organism. According to the president of the University and leader of the study, Mien-Chie Hung, the tannin has antioxidants and free radical scavengers, which cause anti-inflammatory effects, and thus can prevent infection and control the growth of viruses.

Which foods are rich in tannins?
In addition to wine, other foods are rich in tannins. Fruits, teas and vegetables have a high concentration of the substance, according to experts.
