For many children and teenagers, who have been locked up at home for almost a year, unable to attend school and get together with friends on the streets or condominiums, games were important resources to keep their heads in place. This is the case of Vinnicius Maycoln Bitto Vicente, 15, who lives with his mother and sister in Jundiaí, in the interior of São Paulo. “I like Rocket League very much, but only in fun with my friends, because this game is very difficult (laughs). It always gets exciting with the whole crowd. I started to learn chess online to play. I felt motivated, because I got excited about the series O Gambito da Rainha ”, says the teenager, who has been using electronics since he was 6 years old.

Now, he doubled the time on the computer, getting to stay 11 hours a day. “I think this is due to the lack of daily movement, not being able to go on trips, schools, travel. The pandemic gave us a lot of time to stay in our homes and with that I ended up using a lot of my biggest hobby, which is playing ”, he explains. Vinnicius’ mother, Fernanda Paula Bitto, works as a shoe trader and has always warned her son about excesses, but realized that dynamics could help him in times of covid19. “I already scolded a lot, but I saw a video that says that games make children more strategic and thinking, so I think it’s very good. I was very happy when I saw that he started playing chess, I only care if he stays in it all day. For now, he manages to balance things ”, he says.

Fernanda is right to observe the positive side of games. Neuropsychologist Gisele Calia explains that they require a variety of mental skills from users. “In both children and adults. When they are small, they are in formation. So, games require a lot of focused attention, working memory, inhibitory control. These are fundamental cognitive functions for learning in general. In fact, the numbers reveal that the consumption of games has increased since the beginning of the new coronavirus pandemic. In Brazil, there is still no consolidated data, but a report by SuperData, a Nielsen company, released on January 6, reveals that digital games alone generated US $ 126.6 billion in 2020, an increase of 12% in relation to the last year.

For 2021, the institute predicts that earnings from interactive entertainment will increase by 2%. Experts in the field believe that even with a covid-19 vaccine reaching many people, the long-term habits formed during quarantine are here to stay.

” The pandemic clearly had an effect on the digital entertainment industry and some research has shown the effect on the global game industry”, highlights the president of the Brazilian Association of Electronic Game Developers (Abragames), Sandro Manfredini.

But, from the point of view of mental health, how to make a conscious use of games? Estadão’s report listened to several experts in the fields of medicine and psychology to assess the current situation and give tips to parents.
