He was at FC Porto, failed to move to Juventus and thought about quitting

Fernando Fonseca, one of the pillars of Paços de Ferreira, reveals that a failed transfer to Italy marked him a lot “in the negative”.

Fernando Fonseca said he believes this will be his season of affirmation, two years after the current Paços de Ferreira player almost ended his career, disgusted by the failed transfer to Juventus.

The right defender, who made his debut for the main team of FC Porto, in which he did much of the training in 2016/17, has been one of the absolute holders of the surprising Paços de Ferreira, being even the third most used player by Pepa this season.

“I owe a lot to Paços de Ferreira, because it has helped me to grow. I didn’t really like the training part, I didn’t always work hard, and they have always encouraged me to work on the limits. We play as we train and work very well, which makes us stronger. I believe this will be my time of affirmation “, said Fernando Fonseca, in an interview with the Lusa agency.

Like any player, Fernando Fonseca wants the “big stages” and that was close to happening through Juventus, two years ago, in a transfer that did not materialize and almost cost him his career.

“I have the dream of playing on the big stages, in the Champions League and Europe, and I could have gone to Juventus two years ago, but I ended up in FC Porto’s team B. I’m not sure what went wrong, but that marked me a lot for the negative. I really thought about quitting playing “, he revealed.

The 23-year-old right-back took the opportunity to thank Gil Vicente and Vítor Oliveira, for having given him the joy of playing, last season, in an evolutionary process that continues now at Paços de Ferreira, in which he also hopes to break a long fasting.

“Me and the goals have never gotten along very well. I haven’t scored since I was 15/16, when Bruno Costa and I played as extremes at FC Porto. This has been a joke in the dressing room, they say football is over me or Luiz Carlos score. Hence the special party after Luiz’s goal against Marítimo. I will try, but I will not fail to watch a colleague if it is better for the team “, he said.

Fernando Fonseca, who has a contract with Paços until the end of the 2022/2023 season, recalled that his first mission on the pitch is to defend, without hiding the lack of fans’ reactions in the stadiums, saying that he even “misses the whistles” “.
