Palmeiras won the Libertadores yesterday (30) by beating Santos 1-0 at Maracanã. Thus, he guaranteed a place in the continental competition of the next season as the current champion. However, in addition to the Brazilian, the São Paulo club is still involved in another competition that gives the tournament a direct slot: the Copa do Brasil. And, if you’re a champion, who gets the job? Well, it won’t be with the runner-up.
The decision of the national tournament will be against Grêmio, in roundtrip games on February 28 (in Porto Alegre), and March 7 (in São Paulo).
If Palmeiras also win the Copa do Brasil, the direct spot (without the preliminary stages) that the competition gives to Libertadores does not take second place, in this case the team from Rio Grande do Sul. The vacancy migrates to the Brasileirão.
In this scenario, the G4 would become G5. Before completing 33rd round, the fifth place is exactly Palmeiras, who already has a place as current champion. That is, the vacancy would go to the sixth, which is Grêmio.
Consequently, one more spot is also opened in the preliminary phase of the competition via Brasileirão. Fluminense and Ceará – in the table before the conclusion of the round – would complete the classification zone, establishing an unusual G8.
