A meta do Corinthians no Brazilian championship is to guarantee a place in the next Libertadores. To achieve the objective, the coach Vagner Mancini believes that Timão needs to win 15 more points in the competition. For that, however, the Parque São Jorge club will need to repeat a feat achieved only in 2014.
On the occasion, Alvinegro paulista guaranteed an exact 15 points in the last six rounds of the Brasileirão. It was the only time in the history of competition for running points that Corinthians achieved an 83.3% performance in the six final games.
In 2014, Timão was led by Mano Menezes and also fought for a place in the continental tournament. With victories over Santos, Bahia, Goiás, Grêmio and Criciúma, in addition to a defeat for Fluminense, Alvinegro finished fourth in the national championship, a position that, at the time, was worth a spot in the Pre-Libertadores.
Mancini announced the goal of securing 15 points after the victory over Sport on 21 January. After the speech, however, Corinthians lost to Red Bull Bragantino and Bahia, which complicated the coach’s plans.
In the final stretch of the Brazilian Championship, the Parque São Jorge club will face Ceará, Athletico-PR and Vasco at home, while visiting Flamengo, Santos and Internacional. In the first round, Alvinegro won 10 points against the same opponents.
Corinthians’ next appointment is against Ceará, on Wednesday, at 9:30 pm (Brasília time). The duel, valid for the 34th round of the Brasileirão, will be held at Neo Química Arena.
