Bitcoin slips 18% with Yellen sounding alarms – Currency Exchange

Bitcoin fell sharply again this Tuesday after U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen left some warnings about the cryptocurrency.

The world’s most valuable digital currency sank 14.70%, falling below $ 50,000 and even touching $ 45,056 following a drop of 17.99%, according to Bloomberg. This fall follows the more than 4% recorded the previous day, and caused the currency to fall back to February 11 levels.
The negative trend affected other currencies such as ether and XRP, which fell, respectively, 15% to $ 1,497 and 21% to 45 cents.

Yellen referred to bitcoin as “an extremely inefficient way of conducting transactions” and also warned of the possible use of this currency in illegal activities. Bitcoin’s impact on the environment was also referred to. The cryptocurrency’s steep rise recalled the high level of electricity that is needed to produce it.
