Emma Coronel Aispuro, wife of Mexican drug dealer Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmán, was arrested on Monday (22) when she arrived at an airport in the Washington region, on charges related to drug trafficking, according to the United States Department of Justice.

The wife of the drug trafficker, who has citizenships in Mexico and the United States, is due to appear in federal court in Washington on Tuesday. She is accused of conspiracy to distribute cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana in American territory. In addition, the U.S. Department of Justice accuses her of helping her husband escape a Mexican prison in 2015 and of participating in a plan for a second escape.

After Guzmán was recaptured in Mexico in January 2016, Emma Coronel would have helped to plan a second escape from prison before the trafficker’s extradition to the U.S. in January 2017, according to American authorities. El Chapo, the most notorious Mexican drug dealer and founder of the Sinaloa Cartel, is currently serving a life sentence in a maximum security cell in New York.
