SALVADOR AND SOROCABA – No confetti, glitter or electric trio on the streets. For the first time, Elielson Suplício (Léo Fissura), 47, watched through the windows, opened the door, covered kilometers and found no trace of carnival. He even woke up lost in the spindle, in Salvador. “I didn’t cry outside, but inside …”, says the doorman. It is the first time, that there is a historical record, that carnival will not happen. And the cancellation of the great popular festival, covid-19, reaches the other tourist poles of the revelry spread across the country.
It is routine out of season. The most traditional circuits of Salvador’s carnival – the Dodô (between the neighborhoods of Barra and Ondina) and Osmar (in Campo Grande) – dawn and dusk without revelers. Only workers, shop and bar customers, and practitioners of any physical activity passed through the locations. The city canceled the optional point to avoid agglomerations. Concerts are prohibited in Bahia, by virtue of a state decree.
“ The day woke up strange. I’m happy to be healthy, and I really don’t think there should be a party, but my heart is broken, ”said Léo Fissura. He usually goes out for six days – because the carnival would officially open on Thursday – to follow Bell Marques’ trio. And for those who want to party, I mean to wake up without plans to go to the avenue, quench the thirst and the hunger of the partygoers, it was even more painful. “I almost cried,” says street vendor Derivalda Oliveira, 57, who has worked at the Dodô circuit for 15 years.
On Thursday, a group of professionals like her protested, on Avenida Tancredo Neves, against the suspension of events. A study by the Superintendence of Economic and Social Studies of Bahia showed that, without the revelry, R $ 1.7 billion will stop circulating in the city and 60 thousand workers will be without income. In the 2020 edition, 16.5 million people participated in the party. Now artists like Ivete Sangalo, Claudia Leitte e Bell brands will make lives for those who want to adapt the revelry inside the house.
Already in State, in addition to canceling the carnival and the optional spot, trade in the historic centers of Recife and Olinda was prohibited. Blocks and bands planned lives to bring the revelry to the public through social networks and video sharing channels. The initial plan was to produce videos with up to 50 carnavalescos, but even that was restricted. On Thursday the government lowered the standard limiting each live to ten people.
Traditional blocks, like Homem da Meia-Noite and Galo da Madrugada, have already recorded their performances, which will be shown on Sunday and Monday nights. Cariri, who is turning 100, canceled the live. “We respect the preservation of life, but we do not accept this positioning so late,” said Hilton Santana, the bloc’s communication director.
As street shopping and shopping malls will operate on Monday and Tuesday, the Brazilian Association of Bars and Restaurants in Pernambuco (Abrasel-PE) created a gastronomic festival to attract revelers without revelry. “Tourism in Pernambuco had revenues of R $ 2.3 billion in 2020 and we do not know what will happen this year, as it is an unprecedented situation”, said the president, André Araújo.
The waves of revelers who descended and ascended the slopes of Ouro Preto, a historic city in the central region of Minas Gerais, will be longing, at least this year. The city hall canceled the optional point between the 15th and 17th and the face-to-face carnival, considered one of the best in the country, was canceled. Instead, the city launched the virtual carnival ‘Beleza Pura’, in 2021. “All the blocks were willing to contribute with us and made lives that will be shown during this period,” said Felipe Guerra, government secretary of the municipality. The city said it is studying an off-season carnival to move the region, but the event and the date still depend on the pandemic situation in the coming months.
