In the last 24 hours, more than 1,032 cases of infected people by covid-19, being the sixth consecutive day below the two thousand new infections, according to the data revealed this Tuesday, February 23, by the General Directorate of Health (DGS).
With regard to deaths related to the virus, there is regret 63 more fatalities in the country, a rise from 61 deaths reported the previous day and the fifth consecutive day below 80 deaths.
Today’s numbers translate a reduction of 31.3% compared to 1,502 cases reported last Tuesday, indicating that the rate of spread is slowing. And in terms of the seven-day moving average, there is a decrease of 41.6%.
In deaths, the 63 reported deaths increase the total since the beginning of the pandemic to 16.086.
With the figures known this Tuesday, the daily average of new cases from the last seven days lowered to 1,506, The level lowest since October 14.
In the last 14 days, Portugal has accumulated 278 new cases per 100 thousand inhabitants. This indicator, widely used internationally to measure the spread of the virus and a criterion determined by the Government to consider municipalities at risk, approaches the defined limit of 240 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants for a territory to be considered of moderate risk.
Cases active at minimums since January 2
On the positive side, the DGS report shows 4.567 recovered patients, bringing the total recoveries to 705,976.
Thus, active cases, which are calculated by subtracting recovered patients and deaths from the total number of confirmed cases, dropped in 3,598, for 77,044 the lowest number since January 2.
106 fewer critically ill patients in the last 10 days
With regard to numbers in hospitals, the news is positive. They are now hospitalized less 310 patients in Portugal, who put the total in 3,012, the lowest value since January 2. In view of the 6,869 maximum recorded on February 1, the decline is already 3,857.
With regard to more serious cases, of patients hospitalized in intensive care units, the decrease of 30 patients, puts the total number of patients admitted to the ICU in the 597, 106 less than 10 days ago. In view of the peak of 904 patients in the ICU, on February 5, the reduction is 307.
Lisbon and Tagus Valley below 500 cases for the third day
Of the new cases identified in the country, 493 were in Lisbon and Vale do Tejo (LVT), which represented 48% of new infections. This was the third consecutive day with less than half a thousand new cases in the region.
Of the remaining new cases, 186 were in the North, which recorded less than 500 cases for the ninth consecutive day, 146 in the Center, 93 in Madeira, 61 in the Algarve, 50 in the Alentejo and 3 in the Azores.
With regard to deaths, 36 were recorded in LVT, 57.1% of the national total, 11 in the Center, 9 in the North, 5 in the Alentejo and 2 in the Algarve. In the Azores and Madeira there were no fatalities.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, the North has totaled 324,905 cases, followed by Lisbon and the Tagus Valley with 302,013, the Center with 114,245, Alentejo with 28,224, the Algarve with 19,893. There were 6,101 contagions in Madeira and 3,725 in the Azores.
In fatalities, Lisbon and the Tagus Valley account for 6,699 deaths, the North records 5,168 and the Center 2,870. In Alentejo, deaths amount to 929, while in the Algarve there are 332, in Madeira there are 60 and in the Azores 28.
