Red Bull presented its car for the 2021 season, the RB16B. Like the other teams, they chose not to build a completely new car for 2021.
This is mainly due to the coronavirus crisis and the fact that the new regulations have been postponed to 2022, so 2021 is considered a transition year. To save money in these difficult times, the FIA has restricted development for this season.
The car with which Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez will race this year has many similarities to last year’s car. At first glance, this is a good sign for them, as the RB16 performed excellently in the second half of the season and was even faster than Mercedes a few times.
However, Adrian Newey faced a major challenge in the interim between seasons. To reduce downforce, the FIA decided which part of the floor would have to be removed. With that, about 10% of the downforce will be lost and Newey will do everything he can to make up for it.
It will be interesting to see how the RB16B compares to the new Mercedes car. They also needed to remove a piece of the floor, but as the Mercedes car has a much longer wheelbase, the effect of this change may be very different for the two teams.
