(England – Northern Ireland 6-0) Hege Riise (51) has got a dream start in his new job as national team coach for the English women’s national team.
Riise’s team led 3-0 after only 29 minutes played. Manchester City player Ellen White (31) scored the first two goals, before teammate Lucy Bronze (29) scored the third.
– Six goals is obviously good. Four players get their debut and we pushed throughout the match and wanted to score more goals, says Hege Riise to the BBC.
After the break, it took no more than four minutes before the fourth goal was in the net behind Northern Ireland’s goalkeeper. It was White who had put the ball in goal for the third time and secured his hat trick.
– White is a leader and she always wants to score goals. She always looks for possible runs into the box, she adds.
West Ham striker Rachel Daly (29) hurt his neighbors worse and scored the fifth goal, with 67 minutes played on the clock.
– We could probably score more goals, but the performance and energy today was very good, so I am happy, says Riise.
Hege Riise against the Olympic president: – Should not accept it
Riise’s team kept pushing forward and it was clear that many of the players wanted to show off for their new coach.
Manchester United player Ella Ann Toone (21) came in at the break and spent no more than half an hour before she scored the game’s sixth goal from the penalty spot. It was both Toone’s first match and goal for the national team.
The Norwegian coach got off to a dream start in his new job and crushed the neighbors 6-0 in his first match.
Hege Riise new England coach: – A great opportunity for me
Riise was hired as interim coach for the English women’s national team on 19 January.
– It is a great opportunity for me. A huge challenge and something I am really looking forward to. Incredibly exciting, Hege Riise told Romerikes Blad after the appointment.
Phil Neville left the position to take over as head coach of MLS club Inter Miami. His replacement Sarina Wiegman, who now coaches the Dutch national team, will not enter the England job until after the Olympics this summer.
This means that Riise will lead the English national football team through the Olympic Games in 2021.
